Lapeer Community Schools approved for early start for 2016-17 school year

Lapeer Community Schools (LCS), along with all school districts in Lapeer County, has been approved for a waiver by the Michigan Department of Education that will allow students to begin school prior to Labor Day in the 2016-17 school year. Consequently, students and staff will close out the school year earlier in June than they would have without the waiver.

The first day of school for students on the traditional calendar will be August 29, 2016. The first day of school for students on the balanced (year-round) calendar will be August 1, 2016.

Many school districts across the state have applied for this waiver to help account for changes to state law that have increased the minimum number of required school days to 180 effective for the 2016-17 school year. In addition, an earlier start has the effect of aligning the school calendar more closely to the calendars of the District’s college partners.

The remainder of the school calendar is subject to negotiations and will be published as soon as it is available.
