Thank you Lapeer County Community Foundation!
Lapeer Community Schools has partnered with four colleges and universities: University of Michigan-Flint, Baker College, Eastern Michigan University, and Mott Community College to offer a variety of College On Campus programs within the school day in Lapeer.
The programs include Business, Humanities, Computer Technology, Engineering Technology, Health Sciences, Criminal Justice and Spanish.
The classes are taught by college instructors, and most are taught at the Center for Innovation on Millville Road. Almost 200 students will earn from 8-13 college credits this school year.
Lapeer Community Schools is grateful to the Lapeer County Community Foundation for investing in our students’ post-secondary goals and preparation.
Lapeer County Community Foundation issued LCS a grant of $10,000 toward the Lapeer Community Schools Dual Enrollment College on Campus Program. These funds were used to reimburse students for their first semester book cost, which is the students’ responsibility. For some families, the book cost alone could be a deterrent to enroll in college classes. At the end of the semester, we found we were a little short in our ability to fully reimburse families on the first semester book costs. LCCF recently issued us an additional $600 to assist with these costs.
The District is fund raising to continue to address this book reimbursement need in our community. The next event will be a part of the Lapeer Community Spring Expo, co-sponsored with the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce, on Sunday April 26 at CFI from 11-4. And with increased interest in the programs, as well as the development of new programs, including one in CNC, the need is great and growing.
With the financial assistance from the Foundation, all students are able to take advantage of earning college credits before high school graduation and to transition into their post-secondary goals.
