The Lapeer County Community Foundation authorizes grant to support Mayfield Elementary Gardening Club

The Lapeer County Community Foundation recently authorized a grant of nearly $800 to support the Gardening Club at Mayfield Elementary in Mayfield Township. The grant will be used to fund equipment, raised bed materials, seeds and a recipe book for the Club’s salad and snack garden. The funds came by way of a grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund as allocated by the Healthy Living Lapeer workgroup.

With this financial assistance from the Foundation, many of the District’s youngest students will have hands-on learning opportunities that will enhance their overall classroom experience.

“We could not be more excited about the opportunities this grant will offer our students,” said Michele Nowak, who facilitates the club at Mayfield. “Students will not only learn about healthy eating, but about how to grow their own food here and at home.”

Nowak was assisted in the grant application process by students Draiden Castillo, Jayla Holiday and Emma Champine-Smith.

The Lapeer County Community Foundation manages 64 funds to provide grants for a wide range of charitable purposes. Since 1996, over $3.7 million has been given to enhance the quality of life in Lapeer County.
