There was a great story in Thursday’s Lapeer Area View about a very generous gift from the Lapeer Kiwanis Club to the Lapeer Community Schools LINKS Program.
The check, in the amount of $3,000, will help fund several field trips this year.
The Links Program pairs autistic students with their classmates, and the pairs work together on everything from homework and eating lunch together to improving social interaction and going on field trips.
The program started at Lapeer West and Murphy Elementary over a year ago, and since then the entire Lapeer Community Schools district has adopted the program.
Etson said the Links Program went to the Kiwanis Club of Lapeer seeking a donation to help with funding a field trip for students. The field trips, explained Etson, are a vital aspect of the program since it allows students to bond and helps the students with autism put into practice some of the things they learn in the classroom, like ordering at a restaurant.
Thank you so much Kiwanis Club! We are very grateful for this generous gift. LINKS is a program we can all be proud of!
