On Friday, February 17th the Lapeer community will be celebrating the life of one of its own, Sydney Gavan, with a Totally Awesome 80’s Zumbathon® event which will benefit the Be the Match Foundation, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program. Three years ago, Sydney, now a third grader at Lapeer’s Mayfield Elementary, was diagnosed with biphenotypic leukemia. After a brief period of being in remission following chemo therapy, Sydney relapsed. A marrow transplant from an unrelated donor was her only hope of long-term survival. Four months later she was connected with a life-saving transplant that was located through Be the Match. Now three years later, Sydney remains in remission and is enjoying a healthy, “normal” life.
This event also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the founding a national marrow donor registry in 1987, which now operates as the Be the Match Registry and has connected more than 50,000 patients with transplants from unrelated donors.
The 2nd annual Zumbathon® event will raise funds and awareness for Be the Match. Guests are invited to attend a high-energy 90-minute Zumba® fitness workout led by Elaine Schneider and other local certified instructors. Guests are also invited to dress in 80’s workout attire. Following the workout, there will be raffles, a cash bar, light refreshments, and more dancing to 80’s music. Guests will also be invited to join the Be the Match Registry if they are between the ages of 18 and 60 and in general good health. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
The Totally Awesome 80’s Zumbathon® will be Friday, February 17th at American Legion Post 16, 1701 W. Genesee, Lapeer from 7-11 p.m. Doors open at 7:00, the program starts at 7:30.
