Talented and Gifted (TAG) program kicks off with first full-day event

tag — Elementary students from all seven LCS elementary schools were represented at Friday's Talented and Gifted (TAG) full-day event at Zemmer Middle School. The students had a lot of questions for speakers from a wide range of community-service organizations. The TAG theme this year is "Local Problems, Local Solutions."

LAPEER, Michigan — Students from all seven LCS elementary schools were represented this morning at the first full-day event of the year for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program at Zemmer Middle School. Students listened to presentations from community members from a diverse group of service organizations in line with the year’s theme: Local Problems, Local Solutions.

tagwandrie — LCS superintendent Matt Wandrie challenged the TAG students to embrace the challenge of thinking critically about solutions to problems and to cultivate all the positive traits of great leaders.

LCS superintendent Matt Wandrie got the event kicked off with some opening remarks about the importance of leadership at every stage in life. He was followed by representatives from Rob’s Books, Farm Bureau, Lapeer Farmers Market, Paradise Pet Rescue, Lapeer County Historical Society and Family Literacy. Each of the presenters encouraged the students to think critically about issues facing our community and to get a head start on developing leadership skills to tackle them in the future.

In the afternoon, students will again come together within their building groups to decide on a service-learning project they can take back to their schools. The students will develop a presentation and a budget necessary to follow through on the project.

This is a great program that I am honored to be a part of. There were lots of many great ideas for service projects that came from these 2nd-5th grade students.
