
Joseph DeView graduated with academic and athletic honors from Lapeer High School in 1946. He was a class officer all four years of high school and earned the prestigious Kirk White Award for his all-around athletic ability. A CMU graduate, DeView joined the United States Navy in 1950, was named the Most Outstanding Recruit of his class and became an Executive Officer on several ships. He had two tours of duty at the Pentagon and served at sea during the Korean Conflict and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He retired as a full Commander in the U.S. Navy after nearly 28 years of service.
DeView was the first LHS graduate to ever receive both athletic trophies (White and Baird). He graduated from LHS with honors and was a class officer all four years.
DeView married Martha Dunham in 1957. She preceded him in death in 1983. He married Sue Hawson in Lapeer in 1985.
David DeView, brother: “He encouraged me to go to college, and I followed in his footsteps to Central Michigan University. I became and elementary educator and had a successful career in education. Joe was and is my hero.”
Our four 2013 Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor inductees will be honored on October 27, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Administration & Services Center, 250 Second St., Lapeer.
