Lapeer West holds court, wins first district boys’ basketball title in school history

west team photo (1)LAPEER, Michigan — For the first time in nearly four decades of existence, Lapeer West High School will raise a banner that reads: District Boys’ Basketball Champions.

Because Zeshawn Jones-Parker said so.

West’s 6-3 senior forward dominated the game in the first half, leading the Panthers to a narrow two-point lead at the break. In the second half, the lead changes numerous times and, for a couple minutes, Swartz Creek held a five-point advantage. Several clutch 3-pointers from Nick Weber and Cullen Turczyn made Creek’s lead disappear, and few made free throws in crunch time sealed for the Panthers.

Jones-Parker scored a game-high 27 points with 10 rebounds. Senior Cullen Turczyn, the Flint Metro League’s all-time leading scorer, poured in 20 points.

Congratulations to first-year head coach Chuck Mahoney on an amazing season.

West will move on to play undefeated Grand Blanc on Monday at 5 p.m. at Davison High School. Grand Blanc beat Fenton on Friday not, but the Bobcats lost arguably their best player — 6-4 senior Bart Williams.

Davison is only a short drive down I-69. Let’s once again pack the house to support our Panthers.

Beat Grand Blanc!
