At the former Maple Grove Elementary School building, something very special is taking place. Teacher Chris Hinkley, along with a group of other instructors and para-professionals, leads the Community Instruction Program, teaching adult students the life skills necessary to live an independent life.
Two years ago, Hinkley and other special education teachers saw a problem. They were able to work with and help special needs students, but only as long as they were in school. What happened to those individuals after they turned 18 and left the school system?
The answer — Lapeer Community Schools decided to start the Community Instruction Program.
