The buzz: New bee club at Rolland-Warner brings science to life

8th grade students at Rolland-Warner Middle School spent part of the afternoon on Monday learning about beekeeping. The RWMS Bee Club is the brainchild of Mike Wiltse, a special education teacher, and is supported locally with private donations and a grant from the Lapeer County Community Foundation.

LAPEER, Michigan — The hallways at Rolland-Warner Middle School were abuzz on Monday as Mike Wiltse, a special education teacher at RWMS, hosted a beekeeper near the woods behind the school.

Members of Wiltse’s upstart Bee Club (all 8th graders) were clad, head to toe, in protective gear purchased with the help of generous donations from locals including a $1,000 grant from the Lapeer County Community Foundation.

The students carefully extracted the honey-filled hives from their decorative boxes, being careful to remove every last honeybee before storing them away. Each student took part in tasks including extracting the hives, brushing the bees and using the smokers.

Wiltse has big plans to turn the investment of community supporters into a self-sufficient bee club that will bring science to life for students.
