Lightning Volleyball Poised to ‘Unleash the Beast’ in 2023

Barry Jones knows what it’s like to be a volleyball dad, but in the last few months, he’s embarked on a brand new new journey: head volleyball coach.

“Being part of varsity sports as a parent for many years, there haven’t been too many surprises so far,” said Jones, whose daughter was a standout volleyball player at Davison High School. “I knew what the expectations were from a stakeholder’s point of view. If anything, I’m overwhelmed and grateful for the support I’m getting from parents and school administration. This is a special time for sure.”

Jones, who has been playing volleyball competitively for most of his life, was an assistant on varsity last season before being promoted to the top job in June. And while he had a familiarity with the players returning this season, it isn’t simply their talent that gives him confidence heading into tonight’s SVL opener at Saginaw United.

“My expectations are always going to be high; that’s how I’m built,” he said. “I believe in always showing up and performing at a high level. With that mentality, I’m confident we can compete with every school in our conference.

“We will take a fearless approach to every match.”

This approach has manifest itself in the team’s rallying cry for 2023: #UnleashTheBeast.

Junior Baylee Osentoski goes for the kill.

Fortunately for Lightning fans, there’s a lot to unleash.

The Lightning return some serious voltage with senior Lexi Norman, junior Baylee Osentoski and junior Averee Berard. The back row is also strong headlined by junior Jesi Caron (libero – what the heck is this?) with junior Reese Cutway, junior Mya McKenna and senior Josie Jacob adding to the team’s defensive strength.

Finally, there’s junior Addy Seifferly, who was a standout as a sophomore on varsity last season, returning as setter and right side attack.

“Addy offers strong overall athleticism to our line up,” Jones said. “You wouldn’t know it from her slight frame, but she’s a beast.”

All told there are eight returning players from last season coupled with the dynamic duo of assistant coaches, Tessa and Kevin Becker (the pair also coach the junior varsity team).

“We’re excited about what we’re building here, and we hope the community will rally around this entire program throughout the season,” Jones said. “If you’ve never been to a game, this is a great time to start.”

The first chance to see the Lightning at home will be at 7 p.m. on September 14 at Lapeer High School. Tickets are $5 at the door.
