Lapeer West students featured on ABC 12 News

On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 55 Lapeer West athletes traveled to Trim Pine Farms in Grand Blanc, to pick corn for donation to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

In cased you missed this yesterday, here’s a snippet from ABC 12 News regarding a large group of Lapeer West students who picked corn for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, a great public service organization with its headquarters in Flint.

From ABC 12:

More than 50 Lapeer West High School student-athletes gathered at Trim Pines Farm in Grand Blanc Township to harvest sweet corn. Its food that would otherwise have gone to waste in this field.

After lending an ear to some corn-picking tips from Trim Pines owner Mike Yancho, the students fanned out down the rows to gather as much as they could. Their mission is to help the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan which helps those in need.

The farm owner, Mike Yancho, contacted the Food Bank to donate his remaining corn crops and the Food Bank got in touch with Lapeer West for volunteers.  Last year, the athletic department at Lapeer West committed to performing a community outreach project each athletic season. It is estimated that these athletes picked approximately 10,000 pounds of corn yesterday to be used to feed needy families.
