LAPEER, Michigan — The Lapeer Community Schools Board of Education has postponed its superintendent search citing Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Stay Home, Stay Safe order. The order has closed school districts across the state for the remainder of the school year in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.  

Board President Summer Putnam said the Board will announce a timeline for the resumption of the process at a later date.

“With everything that is going on in our world due to the pandemic, we thought it would be unwise to proceed with our planned superintendent search,” Putnam said. “We want to ensure that we can lead a process that is inclusive of all our stakeholders in order to create a profile for the future leader of our schools. In this environment, that level of diligence is very difficult to accomplish.”

Putnam said the Board will make a formal announcement regarding the status of the search once the standard of operation for the Board and the District returns to some semblance of normalcy. 

“We are looking forward to getting back to business as usual, but at this point we cannot predict when it will be safe to hold public engagements,” she said.

The Board will hold its next regular meeting via Zoom, a peer-to-peer video application that will allow the Board to meet virtually. Community members can stream the meeting live via the District Facebook page at 7 p.m. on May 6.
